Area Tips

Two Step, also known as Honaunau Bay, is one of the best snorkeling spots in all the Hawaiin islands. Because of the shape of the bay, there is good protection from swells and clear visibility. Entry is very easy witht he shelf like  rock flats. You can sit here, put your fins on and step right in. The right side(north) tends to be more shallow, and the left side (south) is more deep...up to 100 feet deep. This is where you wil most likely see spinner dolphins.

Marine Life

Full of coral, fish, turtles, wrasses, eels, butterlfy fish, pelagic fish, tangs, parrot fish, surgeon fish and even the occasional titan triggerfish and nocturnal raccon butterfly fish. Because of the shallow depth near shore, the sunlight helps grow healthy coral gardens, which fish love!

Amenities

No sandy beaches, but a few shaded picnic tables are provided. Reef shoes or sandals are recommended...the lava rock gets pretty hot!. Portopotties are provided, and there are also restrooms at the City of Refuge. No concessions or parking lot.

Accessibility

From Kona, drive south on Highway 11. Look for a sign for Place of Refuge at mile marker 104. Follow this road, passing the entrance to Place of Refuge. Look Parking along the road, and walk down to the beach. You can also take a short walk here from Place of Refuge.
