Area Tips

Captain Cook Monument is nestled in the north of Kealakeakua Bay, and is known for some of the best snorkeling in the state.

You can hike there, but this is very strenuous and difficult, with a 1,500 drop to the water, and steep unmarked trails. Kayaks are available for rent on the south side of the bay. Another option is a relaxing boat ride across the bay, which usually includes lunch.

Reef shoes are also recommended.

Marine Life

What you might see: pufferfish, all kinds of of butterfly fish, Potter's angelfish, eagle ray, turkey fish, eels, spinner dolphins, fantail filefish.

Amenities

Although Captain cook Monument boasts some of the best snorkeling in the Hawaiian islands, as well as some of the best scenery, they lack on amenities. There are no sandy beaches, restrooms, showers or picnic areas.

Accessibility

Head south on Highway 11 until you are close to the mile marker 111. Look for a "Y" in the road, where you will also see a small sign at Napo'opo'o Road. Turn right, and head down the steep, scenic drive to Napo'opo'o.
