Just south of Mauna Lani Hotel is one of the big islands best snorkeling areas, Makaiwa Bay. There is easy access through the sandy beach. Makaiwa is generally uncrowded, and has a large reef for plenty of exploring. More experienced snorkelers can snorkel to the left and around the point, only in safe conditions.

Watch for:

• Racoon butterfly fish
• Spotted eagle rays
• Palani
• Sailfin tangs
• Scrawled filefish
• Peacock flounders
• Blue trevally

Facilities at Makaiwa Bay:

• Showers...at the beach, by the restaurant and near the parking lot
• Restrooms...by the restaurant and near the parking lot
• Sandy beaches
• Picnic areas
• A small restaurant, called the Beach Club

On highway 19, turn onto to Mauna Lani Drive, towards the Mauna Lani Hotel. Go staight through the round about and turn left onto Pauoa Road. Stay on Pauoa Rd. for about a mile and park in the small parking lot. Make sure to get your car out of the parking lot by the posted time, otherwise your car might get locked in. The trail is near the restrooms, and is about 3/4 mile down to the beach.
